This is a by-popular-demand DIY project. Over the years, a lot of people have asked for us to do a tutorial on raised planter beds made of juniper.
Juniper is a go-to gardening wood. Dunn Lumber carries rustic Juniper landscape timbers. The timbers are cut into rough dimensions. It made it all effortless. This is a simple project, but it does take a fair amount of elbow grease to get it done. Make sure you have plenty of batteries charged for your drill and impact driver. The timbers are so thick that it takes a lot of power—muscle power and drill power—to put them together. Learn from one of my mistakes by getting a drill bit that is the correct size.
I already had a "close enough" drill bit, so I didn't think it was worth buying another one. Trust me, the whole project becomes a lot more difficult if your drill bit is too large or too small, because there is more wood and more friction in the way as you drill.
Don't worry about the ground being perfectly graded, because the weight of the timber will eventually level it for you. Measure and cut out landscape fabric to lay directly on the ground. Landscape fabric is a mesh material that blocks weeds from growing through the planter bed while allowing water to drain through.
We put down two layers for added protection. Lay out the first tier of the planter bed over the landscape fabric. Adjust the fabric and tuck in the edges as needed.
With each tier of the bed, the corners should interlock or cross over each other. Switching back and forth like you see in the photo keeps the planter stable and secure. The bread-and-butter profile of the moulding world, this collection of classic early twentieth-century design is typical of patterns found across the country in the homey bungalows, foursquares, and cottages built between and Cleaner and more angular than the fancy Victorian styles that preceded them, craftsman moulding is usually built around a post and lintel look, often with creative joinery that evokes mortise and tenon or pegged construction.

Project Planner free download. The Janka hardness test is the international standard for measuring the resistance of a sample of wood to denting and wear. It's expressed in psi, or pounds-per-square-inch. The test measures the pressure required to embed an The measurement was developed to determine whether a species is suitable for use as flooring; however, we include it here and compare it to the rating of red oak to help you make a buying choice.
There is a difference between hardness and being difficult to work with. Generally speaking, the harder the wood the easier it is to finish and polish. Harder woods create good, solid long-lasting joinery in furniture.Careers at Dunn Lumber Company in Seattle
The hardness of wood varies with the direction of the wood grain, and varies from piece to piece. So a Janka rating is an average of numerous tests performed on all directions and numerous pieces. Use the Janka hardness rating as guide, not a definitive answer. We display the specific gravity for each of our woods using it's kiln-dried measurement instead of the non-dried measurement. The trouble with this number is that the specific gravity of a wood changes with its moisture content.
So use this number just as a ballpark guide to estimate how dense a wood is. We've also compared the number to that of red oak, as red oak is the most commonly used hardwood in North America. Most of the time, the higher the specific gravity, the more abuse your tools take. Conversely, woods with low specific gravity don't make good choices for furniture and are more difficult to create nice, strong joints with.

Part of the railing had some rot on it, so we replaced the entire top section—called the cap rail—with new, tight-knot cedar lumber.
Our first step was to remove the old cap rail. The old cap rail was nailed in place, so we used a small, short-handled sledgehammer and a wrecking bar to loosen and remove it.
Because the cap rail provides a lot of structural rigidity to the railing, removing it makes the railing less safe.
You should view the work area as if it did not have railing at all from now until completion of the project. The next step was to remove the old vertical balusters. Make sure to replace the lumber if you find any. Using the old boards as a template, we cut our replacement pieces out of the new lumber using a chop saw. Our cuts were degree angles on the corners. To allow time for the stain to dry we set the project aside and picked it back up the next day.
Instructions on the can of stain will provide more specific information. Basically, any excess stain i. Use a dry brush or rag to gently remove the puddles or drips. Now for the really fun part!
These balusters easily install with screws that mount from the outside. Two screws secure the top of the baluster into the upper rail, and two more screw into the rim joist below.
Installation is easy, if a little tedious. Our first step was to pop the end caps into the ends of the hollow balusters. Next, we set off on screwing them into place. We worked in sections between postsfound the center of each section, and marked the center point both top and bottom. Check your local building codes as they might require something different. We didn't place a baluster on the center point.
This made the mark for the screws of our first baluster. We positioned the baluster on the marks, and drove in one top screw most of the way. From there, you can adjust if it's necessary.Browse our industrial lumber products for heavy equipment, construction and railroad applications.
